CAD Designer R&D (1st shift)

SUMMARY
The CAD Designer R&D uses advanced CAD experience, proficiencies and software to create models and drawings of parts, assemblies, and complete products. This role is also responsible for design drafting of new products but also responsible for evaluating legacy data to update and modify existing designs. This advanced position in the R&D department is intended for experienced mechanical designers. The Designer works both independently and in a team environment with R&D Staff. Occasional collaboration with other departments including manufacturing, engineering and the tool room is expected. This role will also support and maintain the additive manufacturing lab and additive processing.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Creating robust CAD models of complex parts and generating fully mated assemblies with multiple configurations in SolidWorks, may include patent related CAD work.
  • Generate and check functionally dimensioned drawings including GD&T in SolidWorks.
  • Perform basic tolerance stack analyses.
  • Run FEA simulations.
  • Process work through the PDM system for the release and revision of parts and assemblies.
  • Assist with testing and compilation of data as needed.
  • Generate and check drawings to ensure dimensioning, tolerancing, and datum structures are optimized for both part functionality and ease of manufacturing and inspection.
  • Assist in the manufacture of prototype parts and products.
  • Maintain 3D-printers and 3D Lab, process additively manufactured products in support of internal customers and research and development projects.
  • Manage prototype parts and products inventory.
  • Make recommendations to continuously improve our CAD/PDM systems.
  • Engages in and actively volunteers for Continuous Improvement projects/tasks.
  • Participates in and sustains 5S.
  • Must be able to travel.
  • Miscellaneous duties as needed.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 2-year Drafting School diploma or 2-year Associate of Science in Mechanical Engineering required.
  • Working electromechanical product knowledge preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ SolidWorks CAD software experience required.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in a manufacturing setting, preferably in a machining environment.
  • Solid engineering and drafting techniques, terminology, geometry, methods, and practices.
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately & communicate as part of a team.
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving ability.
  • SAP experience preferred.
  • CMM experience is helpful.

  • Ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills at all levels and strong written and oral communication skills
  • The ideal candidate is a self-starter who takes the initiative to identify areas of opportunity and act.
  • Willingness to work outside your comfort zone and learn new things.
  • Competence in computer applications, including Microsoft Office, and the ability to use technology as a decision-support tool.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Office and manufacturing environment.

WORK SCHEDULE
Full-time; core-business hours or determined by business needs.

TRAVEL 
Travel required on occasion.

COMPENSATION
Non-Exempt $83,500 - $92,852 DOQ
